3. Oxi

Brazil’s “drug of death”

In the drug world, distribution follows money.  Most high-grade South American cocaine gets exported to North America, where it commands a lucrative price.  The pure cocaine that stays in South America is rare and expensive.  As a result, drug users take “knockoff” cocaine derived from cocaine production’s byproducts.  Synthesized with a variety of additives and contaminants, users refer to this knockoff drug as “cocaine paste.”  Paste is already one of the most destructive drugs on South American streets, but oxi takes cocaine paste a step further.

To ramp up the paste’s effects, oxi combines already adulterated paste with kerosene, gasoline, battery acid, quicklime, acetone, and other chemicals.  Sold for as little as 75 cents U.S. per hit, most who smoke it become hooked after only one high.  According to oxi addicts, the drug feels like five seconds of absolute ecstasy.  Then it’s over.   Then you need more.  Oxi has users looking yellowish and corpse-like within weeks, and most addicts die within a year of starting the drug.
