Alaska Methadone Maintenance Drug Addiction Treatment Centers

Alaska is home to a burgeoning opioid addiction crisis. The Alaska Department of Health and Human Services reports that in 2018 there were 415 opioid overdose-related ER admissions as well as 100 fatalities in the state the year prior. Thirty-six of the 100 overdose deaths involved heroin. Fifty were linked to prescription opioid painkillers.

The state has begun a response to the crisis by developing comprehensive treatment, prevention and education resources for all stakeholders, including methadone clinics to help heroin and opioid sufferers get the help they need to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

The recent emergence of other opioid maintenance drugs like Suboxone® and Vivitrol® have made methadone clinics less common; however, there are still ample resources in the state for those who need it.

Every methadone clinic must be approved by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to ensure quality and safety for prospective patients. Eligibility for methadone is determined by patients’ physicians or treatment providers.
