Like the rest of the nation, women in Alaska face a specialized and unique set of everyday and long-term lifestyle factors that render them particularly vulnerable to substance abuse.

The Alaska Mental Health Board reports that women suffer high rates of adverse childhood experiences that directly lead to depression, trauma, anxiety and subsequent self-medication with drugs and/or alcohol. The suicide rate for Alaskan women is one-third higher than the national rate and is significantly higher than the rate of neighboring western states. Though Alaskan men are shown to have significantly higher rates of SUD than females (5,647 versus 1,609), the rates of co-occurring addiction and mental health issues are considerably narrower (1,573 versus 1,568).

In an effort to provide the state’s female population with the specialized and gender-specific care they often require, Alaska offers a variety of women’s alcohol and drug rehab centers, including the Southcentral Foundation, Women’s and Children’s Center For Inner Healing, Nugen’s Ranch and more.

These programs help women address the unique and specific gender-related circumstances that may have led to or driven their substance use disorder. Patients receive specialized counseling, group therapy, supplemental therapies and may be referred to medical detox or withdrawal management to help with their acute physical and psychological symptoms.
