The National Institute of Drug Abuse reports that there were 422 opioid overdose deaths in the state in 2017, representing an increase of over 150 from the prior year. At the same time, other substance abuse threats like cocaine, prescription benzos, alcohol and meth remain consistent threats throughout the state. Alabama’s Department of Public Health has identified mental health and substance abuse issues as the state’s second-largest health concern.
