2014 Drug Trends in Maine

2014 Drug Trends in Maine

There are many illegal drugs that are used and sold in Maine. The primary drug of concern is marijuana. What should be noted is that very, very little marijuana is actually grown and cultivated in Maine, rather, it is transported into Maine from the rest of New England and even Canada. Despite this, marijuana definitely remains the primary drug of concern in Maine. Other drugs that provide problems in Maine include cocaine, heroin, and meth. However, these three drugs don’t provide near the danger level as Maine does. For this article, we will discuss the effects that cocaine, heroin, and meth have before moving into the even greater abuse of marijuana.

Cocaine is available throughout the state of Maine; however, it is typically only available in very, very small quantities. Cocaine in sent into Maine via Interstate 95 in vehicles, and is typically sent in the form of crack cocaine. Typically, crack cocaine is found in its most abundant form in southern and central Maine. In addition, the thousands of miles of coastline in Maine make it easy for drug dealers to ship it in along the coast via shipping and boats.

Heroin is also distributed throughout the state of Maine. Most of the heroin that is distributed in Maine comes from Massachusetts, where it is in turn supplied by Dominican traffickers. Heroin is then shipped into Maine via motorized transportation. Since Maine is to the north of Massachusetts, most of the heroin that comes from Massachusetts ends up in southern Maine, but it is also spread to the eastern coastal areas. Heroin is most commonly popular with young adults in the state of Maine.

Meth is currently not as big a drug problem in Maine, at least not near the degree of Marijuana. However, law enforcement expects that meth may soon become a problem on the same scale as Marijuana. The availability of meth has greatly increased in Maine since much of it is low quality, and as a result is very low in cost as well. It is precisely because of this low cost of meth that has increased its popularity in Maine, and could potentially lead it to become a bigger problem. Hopefully though, this won’t become the case. If it does become a problem, however, meth will likely be available only in the rural areas of Maine rather than the urban areas.

Now we come to marijuana, by far the most available and problematic drug in the state of Maine. Marijuana is extremely plentiful and available all year around. Most of the marijuana that is distributed and sold in Maine is originated in Canada and then comes to Maine across the border. It can also easily be originated in and transported form the rest of the New England states and New York. When marijuana does come into Maine, it typically comes in very small quantities at a time, but the problem is that there are A LOT of these quantities of marijuana. There are also a very wide range of entry points for marijuana to come into Maine: it comes across the border from Canada, into the southern areas of the state via the rest of New England, or across the sea where it can end up along the coastal areas. Shipments of marijuana that arrive into Maine from Canada and New England typically come via Interstate 95 in the form of motorized transport like cars, trailers, and motor homes. Another problem developing with marijuana in Maine is motorcycle groups continuing to send in much of it into the state.

Maine has very tough drug laws, and a number of state and local bills have been passed that relate to the possession, growing, and use of the drug. The tough drug laws in Maine are often the reason why many of Maine’s residents who take illegal drugs have to take them from traffickers and dealers who come from out of state, rather than dealers who can grow them from inside the state.

There are a variety of other drugs that are found in Maine as well. These drugs include PCP (which primarily comes from Boston, Massachusetts, and like marijuana ends up in the southern part of the state), psilocybin mushrooms (which are actually cultivated inside Maine), pharmaceutical drugs that can be used illegally, oxycontin (which is becoming increasingly available throughout the state), fake prescriptions, and many pharmaceuticals that are actually smuggled into Maine across the border from Canada.
